About Us

The mission of the Mendocino Land Trust is to conserve and restore valuable natural resources of the Mendocino County region. It is dedicated to providing public access to the coast and protecting working farmlands and forests, wildlife habitat, open space, scenic vistas and watersheds.

Our current work:

Conservation of land for its scenic and recreational values.
Construction of trails so that people can have a direct connection to beautiful landscapes.
Protection and restoration of waterways and forests which provide critical wildlife habitat.
Preservation of family farms and ranchlands for generations to come.
Stewardship of the lands it has protected, in perpetuity.

We are a nonpolitical, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that works all across Mendocino County and currently in Lake County as well. Since its formation in 1976, Mendocino Land Trust has facilitated more than 14,000 acres of land conservation in Mendocino County. Six thousand of those acres are family-owned lands protected with voluntary agreements between landowners and the Land Trust, called conservation easements.

The Land Trust began its conservation work early on by facilitating a land swap that protected the 2-acre Heider Field property in the village of Mendocino. Then in 2002 the Land Trust, with the help of 1,400 donors and many foundations and public agencies, acquired the 7,334-acre Big River Estuary property and conveyed this land to State Parks.

We’ve expanded much since then, with an amazing network of board, staff, volunteers, supporters and partners who have contributed to an impressive list of projects and accomplishments, including several conserve properties in the Willits area.
